PETE’S POST – JULY 2024

You wouldn’t really know it by much of the weather that we’ve had so far, but we are now well into the summer, and moving towards the “business end” of the T&F season.

The most recent match in the Eastern Masters League saw good team turnouts despite being robbed of several key performers through injury or illness. The Ladies took 1st place! After a second place finish at the first match, our “Superwomen” are well positioned to make the final for the second year in a row. The Men’s team still have a chance too. The next match is on 3rd July, at Cambridge. Let’s make that home advantage count!

Making the home advantage count is exactly what the EYAL teams did on 2nd June. A fantastic team turn out and really good performances saw us win a grand total of 599 points on the day! Last season we were averaging 393 points per match. What an improvement! The result leaves us very handily placed in the league.
Our young athletes performed so well and showed great spirit and sportsmanship. One of our team, competing in the hurdles, stumbled at the final barrier and fell. However, not feeling sorry for himself, he picked himself up, dusted himself down, leapt that last hurdle, and finished the race! True C&C spirit and determination!
It was also great to see many of athletes shaking hands with their opponents at the end of the race. Really nice sportsmanship!

The club are also having a good season in the EAL. Our teams are very handily placed to make the final. The picture shows part of the team that competed at Bury St. Edmonds recently. Let’s keep it going in the second half of the season and end it in style!

Having been promoted last season we knew that it would be a bigger challenge this year competing at a higher level in the SAL. We almost got off to a fantastic start, we were only 3 points off 2nd place. However, it was so close on the day that we actually came 4th, just half a point behind 3rd! The second match at Thurrock didn’t go so well however. The weather was awful, and despite the valiant efforts of the team, so was the result! So, halfway through the season we find ourselves dangerously close to the relegation zone. The next match is at Cambridge on 14th July. This is our big chance to put in a fighting team performance and get ourselves up the league. We need a big turn-out for this one, two athletes in every event. Don’t hold back! We really need to be out there competing for the club. If you haven’t done a SAL before, you will be very, very welcome to join the team. Look out for the messages from the team managers and sign up! It will be a great day to be part of.

The 4th race in the popular and friendly Arkwrights 5k League takes place on Thursday 4th July at Carver Barracks. Like last year, the race should end with a lap of the track where a growing group of C&C athletes now train.
Magnificent turnouts, results and team spirit so far this summer, let’s keep that going at this one too!

Calls are already being put out for the famous Round Norfolk Relay! The club has an illustrious history at this event, winning many categories over the years. You can find out more about the event here:ย http://www.roundnorfolkrelay.com/

C&C have strong groups of athletes taking part in the English Schools Championships, and UK Athletics Championships (including Olympic Trials), both coming up soon. 29 athletes from Cambridgeshire Schools will be competing, and more half of those are members of C&C. Well done athletes and coaches, it’s excellent to have such strong representation at Championships of this level. Very, very best of luck to all those that are competing.

July is going to be a big month. So many exciting events, and so much to play for. Let’s aim to be right at the top of our game, and enjoy every challenge!

At Cambridge & Coleridge we want to assure you that you can trust us to look after your data.
