Masters athletes succeed again

The women’s masters team shone again at this year’s EMAC League final on the 15th September at Milton Keynes with a third place finish against some strong teams and as a result of their results in the league matches during the season.

Athletics is often perceived as an individual sport but this result by the team was achieved by working as a team and trying new events for the points. Despite being injured on the day Fiona McCulloch and Claire Palmer dug deep for the team finishing events to gain points.

There were individual wins for Sharon Warren in the 1500m W50-59 age group winning comfortably in a time of 5:46.98 with the second place athlete’s finishing time 6:26. Sharon also won the 3000m.

Sarah McGrath had triple success in the W50-59 age group throws with wins in the hammer, shot and javelin.

Dynamic duo Fiona McCulloch and Lowri Chatfield both had second place finishes in the pole vault, an event that neither had participated in before this season but expertly coached by team member Pamela Abbott meant that vital points were gained in this event. Fiona and Lowri both came second in the 300m hurdles and 400m hurdles respectively and also gained valuable points in the high jump.

Club stalwarts Joan Lasenby and Anne Moindrot had strong finishes in their events both on the track and in the field events.

Lisa Teverson, Pamela Abbott, Rosemary Abbott, Zoe Bailey, Jane Packman, Rachel Leah and Rachel Roberts all made large contributions and scored vital points to ensure bronze medals for the team.

Our club chair Pete Thompson also had a successful conclusion to the track and field season by winning a bronze medal in the British Masters 5,000m Championships at Birmingham and setting a new M65 club record.
